The ability to Create Permalinks with keywords detailing your articles is what makes SEO friendly URLs for WordPress site. They easily pin pointed by both search engines and site viewers. These easily read permalinks increase your chances for ranking highly within popular Search Engines.

Simple, right? In the past, WordPress Default URL read something like:

https://www.cmsmanagers.com/?p=10467

However, again thanks to WordPress contributors, it has evolved so that by default it reads to include the blog post title, which should already have a few Keywords implanted within it.

What’s the point then? This feature was only recently updated in WordPress 4.2. So, unless you have just recently, so an additional note for existing WordPress Users- Update!

Understanding the Permalinks Settings

WordPress has neat nicknames for almost everything, they call Permanent Links permalinks; you will often come across the terms Permalink Structure and URL Structure through-out WordPress.

By visiting the Permalinks Settings, accessible in your WordPress Admin Area, and clicking Settings>Permalinks you will be directed to various options in which you can construct your Permalinks.

5 Ways to Set Up your WordPress Permalinks

Here are five ways to set up your WordPress Permalink Structure and how they can help your WordPress SEO efforts:

  1. Plain: https://www.cmsmanagers.com/?p=123

This was the older default of WordPress Sites and is obviously not SEO friendly.

  1. Day and Name & Month and Name: https://www.cmsmanagers.com/2016/05/01/sample-post/

While this is somewhat SEO friendly and informative to the readers, it runs a bit long which is a strike against you with Search Engines. Old dates also make the content come across as outdated and can be passed over as irrelevant; the same can be said about the month and day structure. They only seem relevant for online publications such as digital magazines and news blogs.

  1. Numeric: https://www.cmsmanagers.com/archives/123

Your WordPress Permalinks will come with serial numbers. Not very SEO Friendly either.

  1. Post Names: https://www.cmsmanagers.com/sample -post

Short and simple, post name structure allows for an easily readable and SEO friendly URL.

  1. Custom Structure

You can go a step further with WP Custom Structure Permalinks, as you can include keywords relevant Categories followed by specific post names. This structure is great for larger corporations and research websites who have loads of data within one category by itself and will make for easier reference.  To incorporate category slugs within Custom permalinks you have to use special coding as follows: /%category%/%postname%/. Be sure to note the percent signs wrapping the category and post names, as well as the slashes that precede, follow, and are located in between the tags. This same method can be used to incorporate other relevamt tages such as author names, partial dates, and other information.

Warning for Established WordPress Sites

Broken Links photo

This is an important warning for established WordPress Sites, especially if you have been blasting your previous permalinks over social media: once you change your permalink structure and alter existing links you will lose all associated data such as media share counts and current Search Engine Result standings.

If you have to change you Permalinks or the existing permalinks in Plain Structure weren’t working in your favor, as far as search engines go, then you might consider hiring a professional who can help you with redirecting site traffic to the new links. You will still lose data on these pages, but they can ensure that your redirects are properly set up.

When dealing with plain structured Permalinks, it is worth the re-development to alter your existing posts URL to be more SEO Friendly. Even when considering the lost social traffic, the potential Search Engine Traffic is more beneficial in the end.
